Once you arrive in Germany, if you are American, you will notice that the German public transportation system is much more efficient and cost effective than that of America. There are many more options and for the most part, you can get anywhere any time. Keep in mind that you can purchase a train ticket from your current location to your destination and this ticket is valid for the train, bus and street car. ie. Take a train from Darmstadt to Hanau then use the same ticket for a bus from Hanau to Frankfurt.
Taxi Cab: Taxi cabs can be found around any airport or public location. If you walk up to a taxi parking area and there is a row of taxi cabs go to the front vehicle first. The price varies but can be expensive at times. The weekend taxi fees are generally more expensive than the fees on a weekday. If you can avoid using a taxi cab I would recommend it. If you are relatively pleased with the service provided by the cab driver a one or two EUR tip would be sufficient.
Street Cars (Trolley): Street cars were the first mode of public transportation in Germany. Street cars make frequent stops and have a map layout of each stop. Check the route and be sure the stop you want is close enough to your destination, if not you may want to take the U/S Bahn, a bus or a taxi. Street cars are relatively fast, about the same speed as a normal car in the city.
Train: The European rail system is set up to be a very cost effective and efficient means for international European travel. With a vast number of inner-city trains running constantly during the day, the German train system is just as effective. When entering a train station (Bahnhof) you will need to purchase a ticket from the machine. You can only buy a train ticket with EUR but you can use any denomination below 20 including coins or bills. Simply select your destination from the list shown, enter the destination number and push the ‘Einzelfahrt’ button. Your change will fall along with your ticket to the tray. If you are planning to travel by train from Frankfurt to Paris, for example, you may choose to use the ICE train. This train is designed to get you from point A to point B much faster than a normal train. ICE trains are a little more expensive but may be the smart way to travel if you are planning inter-country travel in Europe.
U/S-Bahn: The U or S Bahn would be the equivalent to the subway in the States. The U-Bahn covers city areas where as the S-Bahn covers city areas and up to 60 kilometers outside the city. Normally you will only find U/S Bahns in bigger cities. The U/S Bahn normally makes more stops than trolleys making them the smarter choice for inner city travel.
You can also purchase an all day ticket which is good for trolleys, buses and the U/S-Bahn by pressing the Tageskarte button instead of the Einzelfahrt button. It is possible to board the train or trolley without purchasing a ticket but you will be fined 60 EUR minimum and these checks do occur regularly. You can purchase train tickets online from the official homepage of Deutsche Bahn at http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en

The reality of traveling is that it is quite expensive relative to most people’s incomes. Unless you’re fairly well-off, you won’t be able to travel regularly throughout your life until you master some discount travel techniques.
The art of discount travel is more then simply one quick trick, it is an overall approach that you can, and should, apply to every element of your trip.
For example, you should explore charter flights and last minute deals, etc. to get the cheapest possible airfare. Once you arrive in a foreign country, you should meet some locals and establish where the cheap places to eat and stay are.
Discount travel involves a lot of small things that when applied together result in big savings, and allow even those on moderate budgets to travel regularly and enjoyably.
An important concept to get used to if you want your money to last while you are traveling in a foreign country is that of bargaining.
In most foreign countries, and especially those of the second world, barging plays a big part in everyday life, and you will find yourself continually overspending if you don’t participate in it.
Most North Americans are terrible at bargaining, which is not at all their fault: bargaining simply does not play much of a role in our everyday transactions, and except for large purchases like buying a car, and maybe to a lesser extent a house, most of us aren’t used to it - we certainly aren’t used to haggling over small items.
The first thing to understand - and a great discount travel technique - is that in the second world, everything is negotiable, and usually very heavily negotiable.
If you start to bargaining, you’ll soon see that the type of bargaining that goes on in other parts of the world is very different from the North American style: people often start with figures that are double or more their desired amount.
The first step in bargaining is to not be in any kind of rush to get in a taxi, or in a hotel room, or to purchase your item.
Take the time to ask around, and if you can, find some locals who will (hopefully) give you an idea of a good price. The second thing to keep in mind is you have to be willing to walk away, or at least good at pretending that you’re willing to walk away.
Oftentimes you’ll find that by simply showing a lack of interest and willingness to avoid the transaction the price will be lowered, without any need for specific bargaining on your part.
Once you get the hang of bargaining you’ll find it rather easy, and in some cases fun.
The main thing to keep in mind when you’re in a foreign land is that your status as a North American will usually label you as rich to locals, even if it doesn’t seem that way to you.
If you don’t want to get charged double - or more - for every single thing you do while traveling you’ll have to get used to the idea of bargaining - a key component in an overall strategy towards discount travel.

Hiking is a great way to escape the rat race and be one with nature. Alas, your hiking experiences can fade with time. The best way to prevent this is to keep a hiking journal for your trail experiences.
Hiking Journals
Take a minute to give some consideration to your most recent hiking experience. What sticks out in your mind? Now think about the first time you ever went hiking. Undoubtedly, you remember few things about the geography, people you went with, every peaceful moment and spectacular view. The experiences you’ve forgotten are lost to time. If you had kept a hiking journal, this won’t be the case.
There are famous instances of people keeping journals throughout time. Of course, Anne Frank’s Diary is the best example. In her diary, Anne kept a running commentary of the two years her family spent hiding from the Nazis. While your hiking experiences better be more lighthearted, keeping a journal will let you remember them as the years pass.
A good hiking journal combines a number of characteristics. First, it should be compact so you don’t have to take up unnecessary space for other things. Second, it should have a case to protect it from rain, spills and so on. Third, the journal should contain blank areas to write your notes. Fourth, the journal should contain cue spaces to remind you to keep notes on specific things. Cues should include:
1. Who you went hiking with,
2. Where you hiked and if you enjoyed it,
3. Who you met and contact information for them,
4. The geographic and weather conditions, and
5. The special things that happened on the hike.
At the end of the hike, you should be able to get the following from your journal:
1. Contact information for other hikers and people you met,
2. Enough detail to provide you or a friend with a guide if you hike the location a second time.
3. Memories to reflect upon years later, and
4. Something to pass on to your children and grandchildren.
To get the most out of your hiking journal, you should write in it during breaks in your hike or immediately after. Every hike is special, even if you just go down into a local canyon.
Hiking is a great way to commune with nature. Make sure to preserve the experience.

A running definition of a gaming hall is a building that focuses on games of luck. Here, visitors are expected to take a risk going for the slot machines or trying out another gambling pastimes. Betting hall games on the whole have methodically determined likelihoods governing them which make sure the gaming establishment possesses its profit against the betting aficionados. casino sign up bonus
Often gaming establishment games can make you end up dependent speedily. Take the archetypal slot machine, a coin operated gadget with 3+ cylinders which orbit if a handle on the side is manipulated. This gadget routinely reimburses in alignment with a set arrangement of symbols asvisible on the lit panel of the appliance. Unfortunately, gaming room pastimes strive to create some semblance of influence, thus conning the betting enthusiast - the punter is granted alternatives, but in reality these won’t match the gamer’s overall negative odds. That is caused by the the casino never returning the full sum as hoped for. This methodology is often seen at work in popular casino games such as seven-card stud poker, craps, roulette or blackjack.
Five card stud is genuinely an immensely popular casino game. The betting enthusiasts, closely guarding their fully screened hands, place their stakes into a pot in the center that is given to the last participant bearing the winning combination of cards. (Of course, the shameless bluffing hand can easily win too…) Quite like straight poker, blackjack is also an immensely fashionable casino pastime. A substantial amount of its approval is grounded in the mix of luck and expertise and decision making, not to forget a procedure titled Card Counting. The aforementioned is an approach through which gambling devotees can reverse the chances of the card game to give them an advantage both by betting and procedural actions based on the cards shown.
Craps is yet another well-known game based on the throw of dice. Customers can place the stakes on the end result of 1 spin, or on a series of cycles on two dice. In contrast to blackjack, there just isn’t any available winner tactics you could cash in on to bend the odds.
Roulette is another extremely popular casino game of luck — a croupier whirls a roulette wheel incorporating a set of thirtyseven (in the case of classical roulette) or exactly 38 (American roulette) distinctively tagged cells in which a rolling ball will eventually settle, revealing the winner Now if the player happens to bet on a number which wins, which is to say it’s their lucky day, the set bounty is 35:1, the initial bet is repaid. Hence, it’s multiplied by a factor of 36.
Please try to be on guard though, because such casino gambling pastimes can be indisputably dependency forming. There’s a whole lot of lives that have regrettably been spoilt thru addictive gambling + albeit it admittedly seems enjoyable, do venture to regulate your gaming.

RV awnings add something extra to the experience of travelling and spending time in different areas of the country. You might think that putting up an awning each time you stop takes away time from your vacation, but once you see the awnings suitable for RVs, you will want to buy one. You can find these awnings for sale at retailers that specialize in the sale of awnings and at retailers that deal in RV sales. If something should happen to the RV awning, you won’t have any difficulty finding replacement parts. If you own an RV, you owe it to yourself to check out the line of RV awnings.
Once you install RV awnings, you can leave them there. You simply winch them in and out by hand or by pushing a button if you have a motorized awning. For RV’s, retractable awnings operate by means of a 12 v battery, so you don’t need an electrical hook up to use one. You can also get an RV awning replacement that has lighting included, which makes for the ultimate outdoor setting when you stopped for the night. Enjoy your meal outdoors in the dark or enjoy the beautiful sunset from under the shade of your awning.
The canopy support of RV awnings is well able to withstand the force of the wind and the weight of water from the rain. The material won’t sag or flap in the wind keeping you awake all night. There are manufacturers that use the Awnbrella technique that blows the awning upwards, thus eliminating any possibility of sagging. This also helps avoid the problem of looking for an RV awning for sale or a replacement part when the fabric in your awning sags too much.
If you choose Awnbrella as your choice in RV awnings, you will have an aluminum awning made of anodized extruded aluminum. The high temperatures used in creating this type of RV awning for sale ensure that it won’t rust and will resist corrosion from the weather. You do need to have poles to keep this RV awning from sagging and experts recommend that you do not place the posts on the ends of the canvas. The total weight of the poles is only four pounds, which means you won’t have any difficulty getting them in place when you stop for the night.
RV awnings help to reduce the heat and humidity inside the RV by as much as 70%. They help to make your motor home a more comfortable place to spend a vacation when you can relax outdoors under the awning and not have to worry about the UV rays of the sun. You can get RV awnings for just about any size of camper and if you have problems there are RV awning replacement parts available as well. However, chances are you won’t need to look for those for a long time.

Everyone has a favorite story that is dusted off once a year to vaccinate against materialism of Christmas holidays.
After the beloved Bible stories, among the more popular pieces are Charles Dickens’ “Christmas Carol,” Clement C. Moore’s “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” and O. Henry’s “Gift of the Magi.”
Perhaps more appropriate this year is a short poem called “Christmas Bells” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Though written 139 years ago, “Christmas Bells” has particular meaning. It is an expression of reborn faith in God during a period of doubt and dismay about a great war.
Longfellow — America’s first, great poet — was a devout Unitarian, a dedicated anti-slavery abolitionist and a devoted family man. Tragedies involving loved ones shook these foundations upon which the poet had built his life.
Tragedy
Early in 1861, Longfellow’s wife, Fanny, burned to death when she dropped a lighted match on her long dress. She was melting sealing wax onto envelopes for relatives.
The envelopes contained locks of “golden” hair from their youngest child — five-year-old Edith.
Longfellow’s second son, Ernest, in later years related how the five children were the inspiration of his father’s popular poem “The Children’s Hour.”
“While walking up an down with baby Edith in his arms, my father composed — and often sang to her — the lines sometimes attributed to Mother Goose.”
There was a little girl
Who had a little curl,
Right in the middle of her forehead.
When she was good,
She was ve-ry good,
But when she was bad
She was horrid.
Longfellow rushed to the aid of his screaming wife and tried to smother the flames by throwing his arms around her.
It was no use. Fanny died three hours later. Henry was badly burned and could not attend her funeral the next day. His face was so scarred after the ordeal he could not shave and so grew a beard.
Civil War
While still grieving his wife’s death, the Civil War started — and with it, Longfellow’s fervent hope for abolition of slavery by peaceful means.
Seventeen-year-old Charles Longfellow - oldest son of the famous poet — slipped away from home to join the Union Army.
He had shot off his left thumb in a hunting accident. This kept him out of the infantry which was his first choice. Instead, he was inducted as a Private and assigned to the First Massachusetts Artillery.
Charles proved to be a capable soldier and soon was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the First Massachusetts Cavalry.
In this capacity he fought in the Mine Run Campaign at New Hope Church, Virginia, on Nov. 27, 1863. He was severely injured with a bullet wound in his shoulders, near his spine, and was evacuated to a hospital near Washington, D.C.
When father Longfellow was informed of this, he and son Ernest went to the hospital and was given permission to take Charles home to recuperate.
Faith Tested
During the long days and nights that his son hovered between life and death, Longfellow’s faith in God wavered. It seemed that his family was wasted, the war useless and God was dead..
In short, he suffered the same torment many folks do today when the birth of Jesus - Son of God - is challenged, and the conduct of the Iraq War doubted.
As Longfellow sat nursing his son through a long Christmas Eve, he reflected upon the meaning of life. At daybreak he was roused from his inner search by the sound of church bells announcing Christmas Day.
It was a symbolic call to Longfellow. He responded with the following poem in which you, too, may find inspiration for carrying on another Year.
CHRISTMAS BELLS
I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old, familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men!
And thought how, as day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men.
Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime,
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men!
Then from each black, accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men!
It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent.
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men!
And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong,
“And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, goodwill to men.”
Then pealed the bells loud and deep:
“God is not dead; nor doeth He sleep!
“The Wrong shall fail,
“The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, goodwill to men!”

Now that the hot weather is finally here, we are looking forward to long, lazy days on the beach and hot summer nights that heat up after dark. Here are a few tips from lifestyle guru Kim Kristofferson-Magnusson on maximizing your fun in the sun!
1) For family celebrations…KEEP IT SIMPLE!!
Whether you’re hosting a graduation party for 20 or a family reunion for 200, remember that it’s your day to have fun too! To make the most of your time visiting with family and friends, take a vacation from your oven and corral your “grillmaster” of choice out on the patio. Prepare a variety of cold salads ahead of time, pick up some fresh bread, add a frozen dessert, and voila… dinner is served! A buffet-style offering is wonderful outdoors, just roll up flatware in festive napkins, stack up some bright and shiny plastic plates, and all your guests can easily serve themselves.
2) When you’re the guest…get in the “Theme” of it!
If you have a much-anticipated invite to THE party of the season, don’t show up empty-handed… if the party has a particular theme (most of the SUPER-FUN ones do!), bring the host/hostess a little something that shows you appreciate all their efforts and planning. For example, if your host is a poker-aficionado planning a “Casino Night”, try filling an ice bucket with playing cards, dice, poker chips, shot glasses, and poker themed cocktail napkins. If your hostess is a pampered princess who is hosting a “Girls Night Out” (who, me??), she will love you forever if you fill an oversized basket with some bath salts, perfume samples, delicious smelling body lotion, a steamy novel, and an eye mask…just go the extra mile, and your invite will be the first to go out next year!
3) When you’re the host, think of all the party-goers…
When you’re hosting a “bring your whole family” outdoor soiree, don’t forget to think of the “little people”…if the children are happy, the moms and dads are happy too, so be well-prepared with activities to keep little hands busy. Try setting up a ping-pong table on the patio, where the future sports stars can organize a tournament. Croquet is an old, lady-like game that even the toughest of tomboys will love. Even a sprinkler will do in a pinch…
4) Favours are not just for weddings!
Don’t you just love those little “take-me-home’s” at weddings…little seedlings to plant, inscribed golf balls to better your score… When hosting a BBQ or outdoor event, favours are a perfect end to the evening and will serve as a reminder of your fun and frivolity. Why not try making your own BBQ sauce or marinade for guests to take home? Buy a bunch of brightly-colored plastic sand pails to fill with shells and rocks collected on your stretch of beach, or even a festive silk lei, sure to bring warmth over the long winter ahead.
5) Have Fun!!
The most important part of any great party is that you celebrate your wonderful family and friends who have come together. You don’t need an excuse, just gather your pals for great laughs, good music, and reminiscing, and voila…the stage is set for some sizzling!
